Abstract

Background. In recent years, national historical science has shown an increased interest in the study of the Patriotic War of 1812. One of the challenges faced by researchers is the examination of the status of Napoleon’s Army prisoners of war in various provinces of the Russian Empire. The aim of the article is to consider different types of sources, which reflect the realities of the Grand Army prisoners of war staying in the Penza province.
Materials and methods. Implementation of research tasks was achieved through the dialectical method of studying historical processes, including the principles of historicism, objectivity and systematicity. It helped to fully characterize the variety of sources, compare and analyze them. Critical attitude towards the sources made it possible to reveal contradictions and find the positive information that could be distorted as a result of subjective reflection of reality.
Results. In the Russian State Historical Archives and the State Archives of the Penza Region the author found official documents of the highest bodies of the state and central authorities as well as documents of local institutions. Analysis thereof helped to determine the status of Napoleon’s Army prisoners of war in the Russian province. The author found memoirs that revealed this problem. The memories of Napoleon’s Army prisoners of war (Kh.-L. Yelin, F. Yu. Zoden, F. von Furtenbah, S. B. Peshke, P. Nokaz, K. H. L. Shenk von Vintershtedt, K.-A. Wedel, F. Badzhi, A. Flek, Sh. F. Mino) staying in Penza were analyzed. Interesting facts about prisoners of war staying in the Penza province were found in the memoirs of provincial officials and individuals of different class backgrounds (F. F. Vigel, I. M. Dolgoruky, A. P. Belyaev, etc.).
Conclusions. Historical sources at author’s disposal allowed us to reveal the main directions of the state policy towards the prisoners of war in the «era of the War of 1812» and the specificity of this policy implementation at the local level.
